Proven benefits gained by using Teaser Bulls:
- Improved heat detection
- Reduced non-cycling cows
Improvements in these areas will improve your 6 week in-calf rate and reduce your number of empty cows.
A study to assess the effect of running Teaser Bulls with non-cycling cows at the start of mating performed by Christ Norton in Darfield, Canterbury 2007/2008 gave the following results:
- An extra 7% of cows cycled during the first 21 days - compared to cows without Teaser Bulls
- The In calf rate after 4 weeks was 6% higher in cows running with Teaser Bulls
- Cows got in calf on average 2.7 days earlier if run with Teaser Bulls
The impact of heat detection on NZ dairy farms
Heat detection is often a significant problem on farms with low submission rates.
Do you know how accurate you are at heat detection?
Do you know where to get information about your heat detection performance?
In New Zealand, the industry targets for heat detection are:
- 90% of the herd submitted after the first 3 weeks of mating
- 95% of early calved, 4-7 year old cows submitted in the first 3 weeks
The Fertility Focus Report for your herd will show how you are performing compared to the industry targets. This is found on MINDA Pro, or contact your vet to source it for you.
Where do Teaser Bulls fit in?
Teaser Bulls are a great help with pre-mating heat detection. They can run with the entire herd, naturally reducing the number of non-cycler’s prior to the planned start of mating.
Once AI starts, they should be run with both cycling and non cycling cows to improve heat detection in both groups as well as reducing the number of non cycling cows.
Teaser Bulls are excellent at helping you detect those cows and heifers that have quiet/silent heats throughout the mating period. They are always interested!
After the first 3 weeks of mating, heat detection often deteriorates. 'Farmer Fatigue' sets in, and, as cows get in calf there are smaller numbers of cows showing heats (smaller sexually active groups), both of which make picking on heat cows difficult. Teaser Bulls are a great aid in this situation.
Farmers that run their non-cyclers with breeding bulls rather than use CIDRs or other treatments, often report that these non cycling cows cycle well and get in calf early. Why not use Teaser Bulls instead and mate to AB?
More cows in calf earlier means more milk in the vat next season.
